What the desk said. Dated.

Friday, October 23, 2026First edition · The read holds, with reservations. Confidence 71/100.
What changed
The change since the Oct. 14 baseline is expectation plus practice, not proof. Miami landed at No. 14 in the AP poll and beat No. 24 Vanderbilt in an exhibition with zero regular season weight. Confidence rises one point on the stronger outside expectation, but the cohesion and availability questions have not budged.
Why it matters
Miami went 26-9 last season and 13-5 in the ACC. Now the No. 14 Hurricanes are 0-0, and head coach Jai Lucas must prove his tournament turnaround set the floor, not the ceiling.
What to watch
Watch the assist-to-turnover ratio and defensive rebounding at Florida, against Alabama and at Texas. Clean organization supports an ACC top-four chase. Sloppy possessions point toward a mid-pack grind.
What would change our mind
The Year 2 leap falls apart if Miami repeatedly loses the turnover and rebounding battles against high-major size through December, or rules out multiple forwards long term. One low-major blowout changes nothing.
The counterevidence
- Lucas called the makeover "Day 1 all over again" in reporting by On3. That is a blunt cohesion warning for a group with zero shared regular season minutes.
- Forward Marcus Allen's health, reported by CBS News, and Malik Reneau's eligibility uncertainty, reported by Canes Warning, keep both players outside the settled rotation math.
