What changed
Since the Oct. 14 checkpoint, Miami has added a confirmed No. 14 ranking and a 109-96 exhibition win over Vanderbilt. The scrimmage offered useful practice context but no regular-season weight. Miami is still 0-0, with cohesion and availability unproven.
Why it matters
Miami is 0-0 and ranked No. 14 after going 26-9 and 13-5 in the ACC. The buzz is real. The wins are not. Head coach Jai Lucas must turn new size into half-court order before the Nov. 2 trip to Florida.
What to watch
Track the assist-to-turnover ratio and defensive rebounding at Florida, against Alabama and at Texas. Clean control would support an ACC top-four chase. Sloppy possessions would point toward a mid-pack grind.
What would change our mind
The Year 2 leap falls apart if Miami repeatedly loses the turnover and rebounding battles against high-major size through December, or if multiple forwards are ruled out long term. One low-major blowout changes nothing.
The counterevidence
- This group has played zero countable possessions together. Practice cannot answer how Miami will create in the half court against length.
- Forward Marcus Allen is out of the rotation discussion after his disclosed non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis. His health comes first until Miami provides a clear update.
- Miami player Malik Reneau was linked to a return in a single On3 report. That is not clearance, leaving the forward depth and closing lineup unsettled.
